Jacob's Ladder: People...You Are The Reason I Am...

Umer Rashid

Sussex CCC wish to release the following statement: The Club is in a state of shock after hearing of the tragic deaths of Umer Rashid, 26, all-rounder with Sussex, and his brother Burhan. The two were involved in a drowning accident whilst on a day off in Grenada during a pre-season tour with Northamptonshire and Yorkshire. We have no more details of the accident at this time. Umer was a great favourite with both staff and supporters alike and had been with Sussex since 1999. He will be sadly missed as a friend and a colleague and his talent, as a cricketer, was recently summed up by the Captain, Chris Adams, as follows: "Umer is probably the most naturally gifted player on the staff who is capable of playing explosive innings and bowling match-winning spells with his left-arm spin."

  To all at Sussex

My mates and I cant beleive the awful news. Umer was always a friendly, relaxed guy whenever I spoke to him and just seemed to be fulfilling his potential in the team. A tragic loss - my thoughts are with his family and everyone at the club.
I’m writing to offer condolences from the Committee, Players and Staff at Lancashire to Sussex CCC on the dreadful news about Umer and Burhan Rashid which is especially tragic following on the heels of Ben Hollioake’s accident last month. Our thoughts are with you all.
Kind regards,
Lancashire County Cricket Club
I am very sorry to hear of this tragic event, and would like to offer my condolences to all Umer’s relatives and friends, and to the whole Sussex CCC.

I have just heard the sad news regarding Umer Rashid and his brother. We have two boys and can only imagine what the parents are going through. I had spoken to Umer on a few occasions and had always thought what a nice person he was. He always had time for the supporters. My sons have his autograph and I will always remember a fantastic caught and bowled under the lights at Hove a couple of seasons back to dismiss Alec Stewart. At least he will be forever in the Sussex history books for hitting the winning runs against Gloucestershire on that May evening three years ago.

Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

I am so so sorry - tragic news - I am devastated.
I would just like to pass on my condolences to the Rashid family and all at Sussex C.C.C following the tragic death of Umer and his younger brother.

I played on the 1995 MCC Young Cricketers Lords Groundstaff and played a number of games with Umer for Middlesex 2nd XI over the following years. I was a bit younger than Umer and I always remember that he went out of his way to make me feel welcome and to help me out in what was a pretty nerve-wracking situation. He really was a special guy and it's truly dreadful that he should be involved in such a terrible accident.

Although I hadn't seen him for a few years, I always looked out for his name to see how he was doing, and it really came as a dreadful shock to me when I heard the news today.

My thoughts are with all at SCCC and of course his family.
As a member of SCCC I was shocked to learn of the tragic death of Umer and his brother. I have watched Umer since he joined SCCC and always enjoyed watching him play.

I send my sympathy to SCCC and to his family.
